Duterte declines to renew appointment of 2 SSS execs

MALACANANG yesterday announced the termination of Social Security System Commissioners Jose Gabriel La Viña and Amado Valdes, whose terms of office expired last year.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque Jr. said President Duterte declined to renew the appointments of La Viña and Valdez, who had been on a holdover capacity since their terms of office expired on June 30, 2017.

Roque said the replacements of the two have yet to be named.

“Anyway, it’s expiration of term and no renewal,” he said.

He added that it was a presidential prerogative to discontinue “effective immediately” the services of the two SSS officials.

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez said he doesn’t know the reasons behind the termination of Viña and Valdez and added: “I suppose that (the) President, in his wisdom, will appoint some people who are qualified.”

Malacanang confirmed the designation of Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Jose Arturo Garcia as officer in charge and general manager. Garcia was recommended and initially named to the post y MMDA chairman Danilo Lim.

The appointment of Garcia was signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Mediladea on behalf of President Duterte last February 9. Garcia previously served as MMDA assistant general manager for planning.

Malacanang also released the designation letters of Kelvin Lester Lee as chairman of the Movie Television Review and Classification Board Appeals Committee and Marvin Gatpayat as vice chairman of the MTRCB Appeals Committee.

The appointment letters of Lee, who is the representative of the Office of the President in the MTCRB Appeals Board, and Gatpayat, who represents the Presidential Communications Operations Office, were also signed last February 9.

Malacanang also released the appointment of Michael Mamukd as director of the National Commission on Indigenous People vice Jonathan Abad. He was appointed last February 7. – With Angela Lopez de Leon
