DOH asks Pinoys: Fast, exercise after holidays

THE Department of Health yesterday urged Filipinos to consider exercising and even going on fasting, especially if they went on binge-eating during the holidays.

Fasting at least once a week would be a good start, said Health Undersecretary Gerardo Bayugo.

“This is not just aimed to go on a diet. It is really on giving your body some time to rest in order for you to stay healthy,” he said.

Bayugo noted the number of individuals suffering from hypertension and heart attack usually rises after the Christmas and New Year holidays. There are no statistics to prove this, Bayugo said, but “anecdotal statements” from physicians and hospitals are enough.

“Usually, during the holiday season, there is an increase in those having high blood pressure and other illnesses related to excessive eating,” he said.

“Many are saying, especially hospitals and private practitioners, that there is usually a higher number of consultations, as well as cases of stroke, during the holiday season,” he added. – Gerard Naval
