4 NPAs arrested in Davao Oriental

FOUR communist New People’s Army rebels, including a minor, were arrested by soldiers for possession of rifles, improvised bomb and other war materiel in San Isidro town, Davao Oriental on Wednesday night.

The four were identified as Jerome Jaquin Apyag, alias Santilmong Bakang, 25; Jerman Andres, alias Has, 22; Eking Arthchie, alias Bunso, 18; and Reymark Cabilan, alias Bolantoy , 16.

They are members of the NPA’s Section Committee 18 of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee, said Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, commander of the Army’s 28th Infantry Battalion.

During questioning, the four said they were on their way to join a rally in Davao City, Zagala said adding this shows that anti-government rallies “are infiltrated by regular NPA rebels.”

Zagala said 28th IB soldiers were deployed to Barangay Dugmaon after receiving information that a group of rebels was about to transport weapons and explosives from Mati to Lupon towns.

He said the soldiers spotted the rebels’ vehicle, a red Kia Bongo pick-up, along a highway in the barangay at around 11:30 p.m. After a brief chase, the soldiers cornered the vehicle and accosted the rebels.

The rebels yield four M16 rifles, a grenade launcher, an improvised bomb, 89 M16 ammunition, an M203 ammunition, seven magazines, 11 Motorola radios, a digital camera, and three cellphones, among others.

The four have been turned over to the police. – Victor Reyes
