‘Rent-sangla’ suspect shot dead in Laguna

ONE of the alleged brains behind the “rent sangla” scheme was shot dead by motorcycle-riding men after she attended the preliminary investigation of the case in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna last Wednesday afternoon.

Supt. Joel Estaris, city police chief, said Eleanor Constantino Rosales, 58, a resident of Saballa St., Barangay Malusak, Sta. Rosa City, died on the spot due to several gunshot wounds in the body.

Investigation showed Rosales attended a hearing at the City Prosecutors Office in connection with cases of estafa filed against her and other persons involved in the rent sangla scheme.

At around 3:40 p.m., witnesses said they saw Rosales at the front gate of her house calling on her housemaid to open the gate. The backrider of a motorcycle alighted and shot her several times before escaping with the driver.

Recovered from the scene were five bullets casings for a .9 mm pistol.

Police are now examining CCTV footage in the area to determine the identity of the suspects.

Rosales was one of five persons allegedly behind the rent sangla scheme which duped hundreds of legitimate vehicle owners. The group’s alleged modus operandi was to rent vehicles from unsuspecting car owners with a promise of high returns, only to pawn the cars later on.

Police said more than 1,800 vehicles are involved in the illegal scheme. – Raymond Africa
