A tribute to Purita Kalaw-Ledesma

IN partnership with Kalaw-Ledesma Foundation and Vibal Foundation, BDO Private Bank (BDOPB) will pay tribute to the founder of Arts Association of the Philippines Purita Kalaw-Ledesma with the launching of the book The Life and Times of Purita Kalaw-Ledesma at KL Tower, Gamboa Street, Legaspi Village, Makati City.

BDOPB, a subsidiary of BDO Unibank that services the high net worth clients, has a long tradition of sponsoring events that celebrate people, events and activities that enrich the Philippine culture and society in general. Thus, its support of the book launch is a very appropriate endeavor.

Only a handful of women can boast of being as pivotal in the Philippine art scene as the late great Purita Kalaw-Ledesma. She was an art patron, writer, and arguably the mother of contemporary Philippine art. After World War II, she kept the most extensive chronicle of the struggling Philippine art scene; her own archive consists of 83 volumes of magazine clippings, art exhibition invitations, posters, and correspondences with artists spanning half a century.

The Life and Times of Purita Kalaw-Ledesma is written by four of the country’s most eminent art historians–Patrick Flores, Eileen Legaspi-Ramirez, Lisa Chikiamco, and edited by Purissima Benitez-Johannot–and provides a multi-perspective in-depth look at the role of Kalaw-Ledesma’s art archive in the country’s art vibrant scene.
