Perfect flowers to revitalize your home

BY Gabrielle de la Cruz

IN this age full of busy schedules, whether as a parent, employee, or student, there is little time to decorate homes and take care of backyards and gardens.

Flowers add splashes of color and even fragrant scents whether inside or outside the house. Their petals and stems fill homes with positive energy as they please both sense of sight and smell. Herewith are some flowers that are easy to care and maintain:

Vinca. Known as Periwinkle in the English language, this flower usually has five violet or occasionally white joined petals. It is known to be helpful with leukemia, lymphomas, childhood cancers or other types of cancer.

Santan. A common flowering shrub. It has a rounded form and its spread may sometimes exceed its height. When fully ripe, its fruits are used as a dietary source.

Honeysuckle. Native to the Northern Hemisphere, there are 180 identified species of this. Some of its species are highly fragrant and 3 of its genotypes are edible.

Sampaguita. The national flower of the Philippines. Its sweet, heady fragrance is its distinct feature. This flower has also been known to be antifungal.

Melendres. A medicinal shrub that is a native of China. This can grow up to 3 meters or less in height. The usual colors of the flowers are white, pink or purplish.

Petunia. Derived from the French word “petun” meaning tobacco, this flower can tolerate hot climates and harsh conditions. Petunias are popular in home gardens.

Robert Villaluna of Cedarhills Garden Center in Quezon City shared that there are special ways in taking care of these plants. He emphasized that of course, these flowers need to be watered at least once a day. There are cases when the soil would dry up and watering the plants for a second or third time may be necessary. “Kung gusto mong mas madaming bulaklak yung ma produce niya, nilalagyan naming siya ng complete fertilizer or blossom booster” he said with regards to caring for Vinca and Santan. The blossom booster also fastens the process of flower blooming, like how it does for Petunia. For Honeysuckle and Sampaguita, he recommends using the Complete 14-14 fertilizer. According to him, most of these plants can last up to 3 years or even more, depending on the maintenance.

Whether it’s for health, decorative or even just random purposes, flowers enable homes to breathe as they bring freshness to the surroundings.

‘Outrage over the killing of priests today in our country will persist and, if real justice is not served soon will, in all probability, combine for a growing social and political unrest with a polarized Church.’
