Kids learn about EU-PHL friendship through art

FIVE children won over 36 other participants at the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Philippines’ on-the-spot art contest held on recently, at the Museo Pambata. The young winners impressed the judges with their imaginative use of EU and Philippine symbols for their interpretations of the theme “Europa, Kaibigan Ko Ito” (Europe, my friend and my partner).

Grand winner James Silacay, 11, with his masterful use of textures and blending, creatively portrayed the friendship between the EU and the Philippines through a drawing of a handshake against a backdrop of the Philippine and EU flags, solidifying his spot in the first place.

First runner-up is 10-year old Clark De Jesus whose images of famous landmarks and national dresses of EU and the Philippines showcased his skill in shading. Second runner-up Kaitlyn Eugenio, 12, depicted the friendship with a colorful image of a handshake. Joanna Macalalad, 11, bagged third runner-up for her inventive drawing of passengers aboard a hot air balloon designed like the EU flag, under a sun resembling that of the Philippine flag’s. Fourth runner-up John Maputol, 12, showed hands representing EU member countries and the Philippines reaching out and sharing the world.

The five winners were chosen by judges Arli Pagaduan, self-published writer and illustrator, and PBBY Wordless Book Prize-winning illustrator Rev Cruz–both from children’s books’ illustrators group Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK). The winning participants all received medals and special freebies from sponsors and the EU Delegation to the Philippines, awarded by Mr. Mattias Lentz, Minister Counsellor of the EU Delegation to the Philippines.

The awarded artworks will be exhibited at the Museo Pambata during the week following the awarding ceremony, with first placer James Silacay’s work also being displayed at the EU Delegation premises following the Museo Pambata exhibit.

The art tilt was held as part of the Viva Europa Festival 2018, which is organized by the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Philippines in partnership with Museo Pambata. The event, sponsored by Dong-A and with the support of Maynilad and Universal Robina Corporation, began with an art workshop facilitated by illustrator and graphic designer Angela Taguiang and Rex “Da Sig” Aguilar, visual-artist-slash-art-teacher, both members of Ang INK. The session helped the kids with oil pastel techniques in preparation for the contest.

Unbridled brazenness

‘Outrage over the killing of priests today in our country will persist and, if real justice is not served soon will, in all probability, combine for a growing social and political unrest with a polarized Church.’
