Introducing Janillah Pundato

I have always enjoyed featuring new artists to encourage them to further improve in their craft.  I believe these “neophytes” should keep on painting to express their thoughts as they discover techniques in their manufacture of Art.

One young and new artist is Jamillah Pundato, the daughter of my friend Maritess and Mars Pundato. Jamillah has a deep-rooted family heritage of which she can be proud of. She is the youngest daughter of Mohammad-Ali Alangadi Pundato, the youngest son of Bai Permida Alangadi (former “Bai Sa Ramain”) and Datu Pundato Macala, and is therefore an heiress to the crown of Bai Permida, the youngest daughter of Alangadi.

Jamillah has a long line of important Muslim personalities. To mention a few Jamillah Pundato’s better known relatives  which include OPAPP Consultant Dimas Alangadi Pundato; Bai Permida, the youngest sister of Bai Bariga Alangadi Alonto, mother of Dr. Domocao A. Alonto and Princess Tarhata A. Lucman; Gov. Soraya A. Adiong of Lanao del Sur; Datu Abul Khayr Alonto Secretary of the Mindanao Development Authority; and ARMM Vice Governor Datu Haroun Al-Rashid Lucman, Jr.

Jamillah Pundato debuts her masterful artworks this year after her initial foray into the unique medium of Chinese watercolor. This twenty-year-old budding ingenue has studied under the tutelage of Master Ceasar Cheng at the Ateneo de Manila University and has exhibited an aptitude for this art genre even as a neophyte among her seasoned peers. In her classes, she has learned how to carefully wield the brush on xuan paper, a soft textured material that delicately captures fine detail.

Jamillah has found a deep appreciation for cultural meaning in her works. Her name, “Jamillah,” translated in Chinese, means “first rice harvest,” which sets the tone for her series of works, ranging from scenic landscapes to flora and still life. Her name also literally translates to “beautiful” in Arabic, which is highly symbolic of her aspiration to capture the purest beauty in her very work.

With her natural desire to pursue the arts, Jamillah developed her skills as an artist by choosing to become a dedicated Fine Arts Major. She is currently enrolled at Kalayaan College, founded by no less than one of the youngest National Artists of his time, National Artist Napoleon V. Abueva (Prof. Nap passed away only this week and will be honored at the Cultural Center of the Philippines tomorrow, Saturday).

Jamillah is very passionate about the arts and she has no doubt found beautiful artistic expression through painting. She has refined her technique after months of careful study and training and is delighted to share her set of most recent works with the public.

Take a closer look at her work at the Chinese Painting Exhibits hosted by the Ateneo Confucius Institute. The exhibits run from February 12 to 18 at the Shangri-La Plaza Mall and from February 17 to 25 at SM Megamall.

Let’s all encourage the young and the not-so-young in their pursuit to “talk” through their art. Eventually, they will show content and context in their works and……we will “see much more than what meets the eye”.

To Janillah Pundato……Enjoy!

Keep on painting and painting because that activity will give you life…..
