I am extremely proud to know Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso a.k.a. Gigi because as a painter and a sculptor, a filmmaker, director, film researcher, a multimedia expert and a film critic, Gigi “tops them all”.
Good looking (she was once upon a time a beauty contestant), intelligent, and terribly amiable, Gigi commands respect from her colleagues and friends.
As a painter, she participated in several group shows and has had eight solo exhibits. Among her recent exhibitions included the Siningsaysay: Philippine istory in Arts; Women empowerment in the Philippines at the Araneta Center, Quezon City; Hilom, an Art Exhibit at the Glorietta 2; Images of Three Women: Claiming Space at the Sandbox, Up Open University and 2 Women Voices: Visual Conversations Multiplied at Philippine Center in New York
Her solo art exhibits include the following. Tibok ng Kalikasa (2011) which was shown at the National Computer Center in Diliman, QC; Trimate Gallery in Kaohsung, Taiwan; and Dulan ng Sining at UPOU Open University in Los Banos, Laguna.
She is well remembered for her Kababaihan at Kalikasan; Ang Papapalawak ng Puwang (2004 at the SSS Gallery; Babae sa Tag-ulan at Tag-araw at Vargas Museum; Daho at Damo at the National Computer Center, QC; The Third Image at the Vargas Museum; Bartolina Preso, Hawla At Iba Pa at the Pinaglabanan Galleries; Gigi Javier Alfonso’s latest works (painting) , the Cultural Center of the Philippines; and Sulyap at Gallery One.
Dr. Alfonso, as she is addressed formally is one of only two artist that have been permitted by the University of the Philippines to cast and create the iconic UP Oblation. She had the privilege to be the artist/sculptor for the UP Oblation for the UP Open University, UP Manila, UP School of Health Sciences in Palo Leyte; UP School of Sciences in Karonadal, South Cotabato; UP Diliman Extension Program in Clark, Pampanga; UP SHS in Baler, Aurora; UP Cebu; and UP Bonifacio, Global City
In recognition of her contribution as an artist at the university, the UP bestowed upon her the honorific title of UP Artist from 2009 to 2011 and 2012 – 2014 and recently, again awarded UP Artist II from 2015 – 2017.
Dr. Alfonso is an awardee of the 2014 Concepcion Dadufalza Award for her distinguished achievements. She is professor Emeritus in 2015 and among her other awards include winning the Shell on - the - spot painting competition in 1971 and receiving in 1988 the second grand prize at the Tamtam Video Festival in Turin Italy.
Other artists like myself can only view Gigi “on the sides” and be inspired by this highly driven lady who achieves for herself through her well performed works which she has dedicated to her viewership.
Dr. Grace “Gigi” Javier Alfonso is indeed an icon for this generation’s best of the best……
