Each day, a leaf

I can imagine my life. Each day that’s done falls off the tree, falls off the branches, wafts down to the ground  in different colors.

Sometimes my day is brown and sad -- for days, for weeks. Sometimes it’s perky, exciting, high-octane  -- and the leaves fall down in streaks of bright, bright orange. Sometimes, something serious or grievous unexpectedly comes up, and all the leaves are purple -- they’re purple for days, for months, even for a season.

But then, hurray for days when things are fantastic, stunning, happy -- sometimes in an ordinary, quiet, homespun kind of way. For days, for weeks, for months, blessings may come unexpectedly like huge bouquets of flowers flung joyfully in the air, and they rain down like scented colors from the sky -- and, oh, what a splendid sight -- the leaves come down all sunshiny yellow, red and orange! And how strange that they even come in the lightest shades of blue.

Quiet happiness comes in whispers of blue.

My life is a carpet of leaves. Leaves of different colors. And as God walks through my carpet of leaves -- each crisp, careful step He makes reminds me that each leaf was meant to be a certain color, and He’s the one who decided what color each leaf would be!

When I look at my carpet of leaves --marking my days and the different seasons of my life -- then I can see that it’s beautiful. It truly is. I just have to see the carpet of leaves in all their different colors!

Thank you, Lord, for my beautiful carpet of leaves.S. de Jesus
