CCP opens 2018 with Don Quixote

HERE’S an announcement from well –loved, Margie Moran…

“We begin 2018 with a bang with the red-hot classical ballet, Don Quixote on February 9-18, 2018 at the CCP Main Theater. Everyone loves this ballet: taken from an episode from Miguel de Cervantes’ tale, it follows the gentleman from La Mancha as he ventures into Barcelona.

“This is the perfect ballet for first-time watchers: festive and fun, the ballet is a non-romantic comedy that ballet virgins can enjoy. At the same time, it is also perfect for balletomanes.

“Aside from Don Q’s signature leaps, turns and lifts that ballet lovers look out for, we will also feature the amazing Joseph Gatti, former principal dancer of Cincinnati Ballet and Corella Ballet as guest artist. The winner of various international ballet competitions such as the New York International Ballet Competition and World Ballet Competition, Mr. Gatti has been invited to perform all over the USA, South America, Europe, Russia and Japan. This is his first visit to the Philippines, and he will partner our very own award-winning ballerina Candice Adea. They will perform in two special Gala Nights with the Manila Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jeffrey Solares”.

Abangan natin ito!!!

……………………………

I am most happy to watch the rise of Elmer Borlongan, a visual artist to “stardom.”

I fondly remember the young Elmer working in my shop as illustrator – artist in the late seventies.  He was very disciplined and reported for work on time. In fact, there were days when he was present even before I opened my eyes to start work for the day.

Today, Elmer Borlongan is the Philippines’ brightest visual artist and at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Complex on Roxas Boulevard, Malate, Manila, this artist is opening this year’s exhibit season with a big bang - louder and any noise produced by any type of firecracker.

Knowing this artist, I assume Elmer Borlongan enjoyed painting every piece in his collection. Although I have not seen him for decades, he distinctly seemed to be enjoying whatever work was assigned to him. He was unassuming and extremely humble. Soft spoken and never talkative, his works were his voice and I had the privilege to hear him “speak” visually.

Now that I am semi-retired from fashion, on hindsight, I see people and events clearer. It has become one of my blessings to have had the pleasure of knowing many personalities who have reached their heights through the years.  Elmer Borlongan is one of them!

I am proud of that fact……I know Elmer Borlongan, the Star, will shine forever.

Congratulations, Elmer….stay humble and enjoy the fruits of your good works!!!!

Column of the Day

Tearing down the house (Second of a series)

Jego Ragragio's picture
By Jego Ragragio | July 18,2018
‘The draft Federal Constitution is a clear example of tearing a house down in order to install a new door—where the new door goes into an existing door jamb. There’s barely anything new here, and the few things that are new, don’t actually need a constitutional amendment.’

Opinion of the Day

Heed this constitutional expert’s warning

Ellen Tordesillas's picture
By ELLEN TORDESILLAS | July 18, 2018
‘The critique of Gene Lacza Pilapil, assistant professor of Political Science at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, one of the resource persons, should warn us about the draft Federal Constitution produced by the Duterte-created Consultative Committee.’
