Andrea O. Veneracion honored

My friend, Martin Lopez, sent me this message: “As one of the lead organizers of the annual Musica FEUropa, I have seen first hand how choral music continues to grow in popularity around the Philippines.

More choirs form and develop, not just in schools but also in communities, churches and corporations. Many of these choirs compete locally and internationally. In fact, Filipino choirs and composers are gaining exposure and recognition overseas. Musical bonds are formed that transcend geography and even politics and religion. It is wonderful to hear Filipino choirs singing in different languages.

Similarly, it is equally impressive to hear foreign choirs singing Filipino songs.

“From July 20 to 23, Filipino and foreign choirs will gather and compete in the 3rd Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival in the Cultural Center at the Philippines. Named for the National Artist for Music who started the Philippine Madrigal Singers, the festival will have 3 categories and will have choirs singing in a variety of Filipino and foreign languages. I am proud to write that 4 of the participating local choirs already won in Musica FEUropa!”

Camp out at the CCP this weekend, cheer for the choirs and enjoy their music!

THE Cultural Center of the Philippines with the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) of the Department of Tourism presents the 3rd Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival on July 20-23, 2017. The Festival, which follows the successes of the first and second Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festivals held in 2013 and 2015, respectively, will witness nine foreign and local choirs compete in three categories: Folk Song, Vocal Ensemble and Chamber Choir.

The competing choirs are the following: University of Baguio Voices Chorale, Brawajiya University Student Choir (Indonesia), Choir of the University of Silesia “Harmonia” (Poland), Koro Ilustrado, Medan Community Male Choir (Indonesia), Philippine Vocal Ensemble, Technological Institute of the Philippines Choral Society,  University of the Philippines Los Baños Choral Ensemble, and the UST The Accountancy Chamber Singers.

The Folk Song competition will showcase the performances of Filipino choirs singing folk songs from the Philippines, the Asian region, and from outside of the Asian region and foreign choirs singing folk songs from their home country, from another country in their region and from the Philippines. The Vocal Ensemble competition will see choirs, composed of a maximum of only 16 singers, sing freely chosen pieces with the exception of folk songs. The Chamber Choir competition will present choirs singing period pieces: one Renaissance/Early Baroque choral work, one Romantic choral work, one 20th or 21st century choral work; and the obligatory piece entitled “Daluyong”, a newly commissioned work composed by Ily Matthew Maniano. “Daluyong” is a tribute to the Yolanda victims and survivors.

A jury of five internationally renowned adjudicators – one from North America, one from Europe, one from South America, one from Africa/Australia and one from the Philippines will evaluate the competitors.  These are the following: Dr. Kent Hatteberg (USA), Bengt Ollén (Sweden), Maria Guinand (Venezuela), Dr. Ronald Smart (Australia), and Mark Anthony Carpio (Philippines).

The Festival schedule is as follows: Opening Ceremonies (Free), Thursday, July 20, 2017, 7  p.m.; Folk Song Competition, Friday, July 21, 2017, 7  p.m.; Vocal Ensemble Competition and Chamber Choir Competition, Saturday, July 22, 2017, 4  p.m.; Philippine Madrigal Singers Gala, Sunday, July 23, 2017, 3  p.m.; Closing Ceremonies (Free), Sunday, July 23, 2017, 6:00 p.m..
