Miss Ph Earth beauties take fashion to a new high

THE forty contestants of the 17th Miss Philippines Earth pageant took fashion to a new high when they paraded in the “Trash to Class” competitions held at Versailles Palace across Ayala Alabang, Las Piñas last Tuesday.

The Earth warriors gathered recyclable trash materials – plastic spoons, straw, bags, plastic bottles and caps, aluminum caps from soda cans, broken glass, used compact discs, rice sacks, etc. – and converted them into fashionable wearables to the delight of the judges and audience who trooped to the event.

At the end of the competition, Celine Mae Pangan of Ozamiz was awarded the gold medal for her fabulous sky blue Filipiniana attire accentuated with plastic caps and spoons and cardboard cutouts wrapped in plastic bags highlighted by a backpiece with a sunburst design made of broken glass.

The silver medal went to Rheena Rae Ferrer of Makati whose ensemble included a pair of pants studded with aluminum caps from used soda cans.

The bronze medal was shared by Klaidel Hope Anderson Concepcion of Marikina and Marie Sherry Ann Tormes of Mandaluyong.

Concepcion got a big round of applause for her “the show must go on” attitude, coming up with a last-minute ensemble after her designer failed to show up. She had to make do with a basic red dress, “begged” for extra materials from Miss Pasay and Miss Lobo (Batangas), pulled out an unused black cloth backstage and showed up on stage with a confident stance that won the admiration of the audience and judges.

The winners were awarded by Allen C. Roxas, president of State Properties Corporation that developed the 75-hectare Versailles Alabang, a posh flood-free village of Mediterranean-style villas across Ayala Alabang that has hosted Miss Philippines Earth and Miss Earth events over the last seven years.

Three other contestants also won four other titles at the event: Samantha Viktoria Acosta of Pulilan, Bulacan was chosen as Miss Psalmstre and Miss Redfox while Neliza Bautista of Villanueva, Misamis Oriental was named as Miss Psalmstre New Placenta. Kim de Guzman of Olongapo was awarded the title Miss Boardwalk.

The environmental advocacy-driven pageant will wrap up its preliminary events in the next two weeks going into the awaited grand finals to be held at the MOA Arena on July 15, to be aired by ABS-CBN on July 16.
