Celebrities cry foul at Sotto’s boorish remark

SOCIAL media was all abuzz last Wednesday, May 3 after the remark of Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto to Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo.

Sotto, a member of the Commission on Appointments, asked Taguiwalo a personal question at her confirmation hearing.

“Just on the lighter side, Senator Drilon and I were looking at the personal information about you. You have two children, daughters or sons?” he said. “But you’re single?”

“In the street language, when you have children and you are single, ang tawag do’n ay na-ano lang,” he told Taguiwalo.

Many celebrities cried foul and posted their reactions to Sotto, who is also a comedian and host of a noontime show, on the social media.

International actress Lea Salonga decried the demeaning statement in a series of tweets.

“For much of my growing-up years, my mother was a single mother. I curse anyone and everyone that sees women like her as ‘less than’.”

“For those that look down upon these beloved ladies, there’s a special place in hell for the likes of you.”

“My husband was, for much of his upbringing, raised by a single mother. I curse anyone that sees women like her as ‘less than’,” she wrote.

“Senator Tito Sotto I am a single mother of 2 and I’m proud of myself and I have so much respect para sa lahat ng single mothers na tumatayong nanay at tatay,” said Claudine Barretto, “para sa akin ang mga single mothers wala ho kaming dayoff,

sweldo o benefits.

“Mas maraming masasabi si Judy Taguiwalo tungkol kay Tito Sotto pero hindi niya ‘yun gagawin because she’s an HBIC and she’s beyond that,” reacted news anchor Gretchen Fullido.

“My respect to all the single mothers who take on the immense responsibility of successfully raising children on their own,” actress Janine Gutierrez expressed.

“Sotto making fun of single parents this time? I mean, how many uneducated statements can you make before you actually learn to shut up,” stated Kapamilya star Lauren Young.

Couple Liza Diño and Aiza Seguerra, Sotto’s former co-host, both threw their support behind Taguiwalo.

“Sec. Judy Taguiwalo, saludo ako sa iyo,” Seguerra said.

“We’re with you Manay Sec. Judy Taguiwalo!” wrote Diño.

Sotto later apologized for what he said about single mothers. “As I’ve said, it was meant as a joke, and everybody laughed. I don’t think it was done disrespectfully. But as I said, just to drive home the point, if they are offended, then I apologize.” (Jasmin D. Calucer, Angelica L. Tiongco, Jessa P. Zobel)
