Catriona Gray leads Binibining Pilipinas 2018 winners

SAVE for one, the winners of the 55th Binibining Pilipinas at the Araneta Coliseum early yesterday morning are all “veterans” in previous national and provincial pageants, led by a Filipino-Australian beauty who convincingly aced the question-and-answer round and snared five special awards.

Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray, 24, who represented Albay, was crowned as Miss Universe Philippines 2018 and earned the right to compete at the 67th Miss Universe later this year.

Standing 5’10” and cheered on by thousands of fans and supporters at the Big Dome, Catriona also snared five special awards, namely, Best in Swimsuit, Best in Evening Gown, Pitoy Moreno Best in National Costume, Bb. Ever Bilena and Jag Denim Queen.

During the Q&A round, US Ambassador Sung Kim asked Gray, “After the devastating war, Marawi is now on its way to recovery. What is your message to the young women of Marawi?”  She replied: “Thank you for that question. My answer and my message to the women is to be strong. As women, we’re the head of the household and we have amazing influence not only in our families, as mothers, sisters and friends, but also in our community. If we could get the women to stay strong and be that image of strength for the children and the people around them, then once the rebuilding is complete and is underway, the morale of the community will stay strong and high.”

Gray who is a model, host and singer-composer, was also crowned as Miss World Philippines in 2016 and eventually finished as 3rd runner-up at the 66th Miss World in Washington, D.C. that same year.

Named as Bb. Pilipinas-International 2018 was Maria Ahtisa Rodriguez Manalo, 20, an Accountancy student from Candelaria, Quezon.

When asked by Miss International Lara Quigaman how a beauty queen should respond to ruthless criticism, Manalo said, “A beauty queen should always respond to criticisms constructively. We beauty queens are public figures and we put ourselves in a position to be judged. But nonetheless, we should always filter which comments we should accept and what we should not.”

Manalo, who was also crowned as Bb. Niyogyugan Festival in 2016 and represented her hometown’s Kandila Festival at Reyna ng Aliwan Fiesta, will vie for the country’s 7th Miss International crown in Tokyo, Japan in November.

Crowned as Bb. Pilipinas-Grand International 2018 was Eva Psychee Soroño Patalinjug, 23, a registered nurse and Law student from Cebu City.

A former Mutya ng Pilipinas titleholder, Eva was also named Binibining Photogenic and will vie for the 6th Miss Grand International later this year.

Named as Bb. Pilipinas-Supranational 2018 was Jehza Mae Sotillo Huelar, 23, a former executive assistant from Davao City who was also Binibining Pilipinas 2nd runner-up in 2016. Huelar will compete at the 10th Miss Supranational in Poland later this year.

Adjudged as Bb. Pilipinas-Intercontinental 2018 was Karen Julieta Boyonas Gallman, a 25-year-old half Australian who represented her mother’s hometown of Ubay, Bohol. Gallman also competed for Binibining Pilipinas in 2012 where she made it to the top 15. She will vie for Miss Intercontinental later this year. Patalinjug was named Face of Binibini.

The Bb. Pilipinas-Globe 2018 crown went to professional volleyball champion Michele Theresa Imperial Gumabao, 25, from Quezon City. One of the tallest contestants at 5’10,” Gumabao will represent the Philippines at the 47th Miss Globe later this year. She was awarded Binibining Cream Silk.

The first runner-up was Vickie Marie Milagrosa Sausa Rushton, 25, an actress and model from Talisay, Negros Occidental who was a former Mutya ng Pilipinas winner.

Second runner-up was Samantha Mae Adaliga Bernardo, 25, a folk dance advocate from Puerto Princesa who previously competed for Miss World Philippines in 2013.

Semi-finalists Muriel Orais was awarded Binibining Philippine Airlines, Samantha Bernardo was voted Manila Bulletin Reader’s Choice Award winner and Shane Tormes was awarded Binibining Friendship and Binibining Best in Talent.

Aside from Ambassador Sung Kim and Lara Quigaman, the panel of judges also included actor Gerald Anderson, volleyball star Alyssa Valdez, basketball star Thirdy Ravena, ABS-CBN Lifestyle Ecosystem head Ces Oreña-Drilon, ABS-CBN’s chief technology officer Martin Lopez, Megawide Construction chairman Edgar Saavedra, Novotel Hotels general manager Mike Brown and Ambassador Victor Hugo Echiverri of Colombia.

Hosted by Miss Universe 2016 Pia Wurtzbach and Richard Gutierrez, the 55th Bb. Pilipinas finals started at 8:30 p.m. Sunday and ended at 1:30 am Monday after the delayed telecast was made to catch up with the live proceedings at the Big Dome.
