On December 18, Sunday (Monday morning PH time) at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, USA, Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray of the Philippines will battle it out with 116 other delegates worldwide for the 66th Miss World crown currently held by Mireia Lalaguna of Spain.
Not unlike Miss World 2013 Megan Young three years ago, Catriona, 22, is a strong favorite to clinch the second Miss World crown for the Philippines.
After making it as a top ten finalist in the Talent challenge event last week where she amazed the judges with her singing prowess – she is a true-blue singer with a Masters Certificate in Music Theory from Berklee College of Music in Boston – Catriona also made it as a Top 24 finalist. The winner will be determined thru voting at MobStar app and will perform during the finals.
The Beauty with a Purpose program of Miss World Charities raises money and participates in humanitarian projects around the world – the very essence of Miss World. Catriona’s Paraiso Bright Beginnings project is in sync with the organization’s direction as it aims to build schools for children of poor families living near garbage dumpsites.
“In partnership with Young Focus, I intend to raise funds for the procurement and renovation of a three-story building (near Smokey Mountain in Tondo, Manila) that would serve as a preschool for children aged 3-5 yrs. This would allow the number of preschool-aged students to grow from 80 to 300. Securing this building will allow the young children to have access to a free learning environment – a chance and opportunity that every child is entitled too,” she shared.
Catriona is among the Top 3 hot picks of several pageant websites as well as betting agencies.
The Fil-Aussie beauty was born in Cairns, Australia to an Australian father, Ian Gray, and a Filipino mother, Normita Ragas Magnayon from Oas, Albay. In 2007, Catriona was a finalist in the Girlfriend Magazine modeling competition in Australia, subsequently signing with a major modelling agent in Australia that opened doors for her modelling career in Asia.
After finishing high school studies in Australia, she made the decision to move to Manila where she immediately gained popularity as one of the most celebrated and sought-after models in the country. Within a few months of arriving in Manila, and still just 18, she was featured as one of Cosmo magazine’s eight sexiest models in the Philippines, along with her friend Valerie Weigmann, who was Miss World Philippines 2014 and Miss World 2014 Top 25 quarter-finalist.
Aside from aspiring to be a recording artist, Catriona also plays the guitar and has a black belt in taekwondo.
The Miss World 2016 challenge events all contribute towards the selection of the top 20 semi-finalists. In each event – Talent, Top Model, Sports and Fitness, Multimedia and Beauty with a Purpose – points are awarded. The interview scores, which contain the most emphasis, will be added to determine the top 20.
Pageant Watch wishes Catriona all the best…bring home our second Miss World crown!
