‘Kumapit Ka Lang’ big winner at ‘ASOP 5’

The inspirational praise song “Kumapit Ka Lang” was hailed as “ASOP’s” grand winner at the grand finals night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum last November 7.

The song, interpreted by Mela, bagged the “Song of the Year” title and won for “ASOP’s” youngest composer, Naomi Ocio, the P500,000 cash prize.

The composer was in tears as she expressed her gratitude in front of the crowd numbering more than 10,000 people. “Salamat po sa Dios, sa lahat po ng sumusuporta,” she said, overcome with emotions, “Nineteen years old pa lang po ako, ‘di ko po akalain… salamat po sa Dios, kay Bro. Eli at Bro Daniel and the whole ‘ASOP’ production. Sa lahat po ng composers, at interpreters, congratulations; panalo po tayong lahat. At sa lahat po ng sumusuporta at patuloy na susuporta sa ASOP, at syempre sa judges ngayong gabi at sa pamilya ko po. Salamat po sa Dios!”

She also enjoined young people like her to put their talents to good use.

“Sa lahat ng kabataan, i-ni-encourage ko ang lahat, especially po mga kabaataan, na gumawa rin po ng mga awit para sa Dios, kasi wala po tayong sapat na magagawa kundi ‘yung awit na para sa Dios,” she said.

The runners-up were “God Will Always Make a Way” (first), composed by Glenn Bawa and Ronald Calpis and interpreted by Bugoy Drilon and “Araw at Ulan” (second), composed by Joselito Caleon and interpreted by Sitti. Tied at third runner-up were “You Stood By Me,” composed by Vincent Labating and interpreted by Jason Fernandez and “Mula sa Aking Puso,” composed by Joseph Ponce and interpreted by Carlo David.

People’s Choice Award was “Ikaw Lamang” by Jonathan Sta. Rita and interpreted by Tim Pavino, while the best interpreters were Jason Fernandez and Bugoy Drilon.

The judges of ASOP were composed of respected icons in the Philippine entertainment industry, namely, superstar Nora Aunor, singing champ Jed Madela, Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors president Isah Red, songwriter Trina Belamide and composer Mon del Rosario.

Bro. Eli Soriano and Daniel Razon promised that “ASOP” would continue producing more original praise songs and announced that the festival will go international.

“We will be taking ‘ASOP’ to its next level, ibig sabihin po aangat tayo ng kaunting level and we will be going international, with God’s help. Ang i-no-organize po natin ngayon is how to come up with the weekly and monthly finals with different countries. Meaning to say, ang mga Filipino ay nakakalat sa ibat ibang bahagi ng mundo, so, we will bring the (ASOP) weekly and monthly finals sa iba’t ibang bansa.”
