Defense industrial zone planned in Bataan

Bataan is expanding its 300-hectare military arsenal to include another 3,000 hectares to be developed into a defense industrial zone.

Charito Plaza, director-general of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), said the government would invite investors for the manufacture of various military equipment, including ammunition, aircraft parts, jeeps, drones and even combat clothing, into this defense industrial complex.

Plaza said this would be the first among the defense industrial zones being pushed by PEZA, which is also eyeing similar developments in Puerto Princesa and Zambales.

The Bataan arsenal, which is being managed by the Department of National Defense (DND), is located in Hermosa town which is offering an additional 3,000 hectares to accommodate locators of the complex.

Plaza said a portion of the property would be for logistics.

She added that instead of rentals, locators would be asked to pay in the form of equipment such as aircraft or arms and armaments.

This way, PEZA would be able to help the DND modernize its military.

Arms Corporation of the Philippines is one of the players in this industry, making firearms and ammunitions.

“Every country has a defense (organization), a police (organization) which have to modernize,” Plaza said.
